THE SOLDIER – SUMMARY
The poem “The Soldier” has been composed by a great war poet, Rupert Brooke. He was a poet and soldier in England army. The soldiers of England are fighting against those of Germany in the First world war. He is sent in the First world war to fight against the Germans and he dies during the war. Before his death, he composes four poems and all his poems are of 14 lines, therefore they are called sonnets. Of all four poems, the soldier is the best. In this poem, he has described his love towards his country and country men, therefore this is called a patriotic poem. The poet is very happy because he has got a chance to serve his country. He is ready to sacrifice his life for his country men. He says that whatever he has got in his life upto now it has been given by his motherland and countrymen. He thinks that if he sacrifice his life for his country men, they will not forget him but they will respect and love him much and they will regard him as a brave son of motherland. He wants to teach the lesson of friendship to his enemies (Germans) who disturb the life of their neighbours. He wants to see peaceful environment in his country where the English can live happily.
